AUB BULLETIN REVIEW OF THE AUB FHS LECTURE IN REIKI
Lecture on Reiki & Integrative Medicine at the AUB Faculty of Health Science
Reiki Master & Australian qualified Pharmacist, Farida Abou Khizam, presented a lecture on the ‘Health Benefits and Uses of Reiki in Medicine’. A large audience of over 130 students attended the lecture at the Van Dyke Amphitheatre of the Faculty of Health.
Reiki is defined as a ‘Biofield Medicine’ by the US National Institute of Health (NIH). The aim of the lecture was to demonstrate how Reiki is employed overseas in a wide range of ailments and conditions. These include: Stress Reduction; Cancer; AIDS; Alzheimer’s Disease; Palliative Care; Emotional Issues; Low Immunity; Post-Operative Recovery; Pregnancy; Drug Addictions (including Smoking); Wound Healing; Nurses & Carers’ Burnout; High Blood Pressure; Pain Relief; Fatigue and Joint Disease.
Ms. Abou Khizam presented studies on Reiki by the NIH and various esteemed hospitals and universities. She also showed how hospitals such as: John Hopkins Hospital; Harvard University Cancer Centre; New York Presbyterian Hospital & Hartford Hospital, amongst many others in the USA, Canada, Europe & Australia, have an ‘Integrative Medicine Department’. These departments work to incorporate Reiki and other Holistic Therapies as standard hospital treatments for patients. Doing so treats the whole person (mind, body & soul) -and not just the physical body. This is of great relevance to medicine since stress is believed to be a major cause of disease. As Cardiologist Dr.Mehet Oz, nominated as American Doctor of 2007, says, ‘Energy Medicine is the New Frontier in Medicine’. And indeed, harnessing the endogenous energy inside our magnificently powerful and capable bodies, can empower our healing and bring balance where there is disease and imbalance.
Ms. Abou Khizam practices and teaches Reiki to AUB students, staff and alumni at the AUB Charles Hostler Centre by appointment. She can be contacted at fkhizam@hotmail.com
